Known as the island of the Gods,‌ Bali attracts surfers from all around the world. Bali is home to some of the most spectacular surfing locations. Notable names include Uluwatu Beach, Impossible Beach, Canggu, Kuta and the list goes on.

It’s no surprise that Bali tops the list of many travelers and surfers as a dream surfing destination.  However, before you grab a plane ticket and head off to Bali, there are some things you should take note of.

Woman Surfer in Trip

Here are some travel tips for a great and safe surfing trip to Bali.

Choose surfing destinations

With so many surfing locations to choose from, it would be best if you did some research before deciding which ones to visit. Keep in mind each surfing location will have its own breaks, water conditions, accessibility, temperature and hazards. Some places may even require you to do a bit of hiking due to its remote location, which may or may not be a deal-breaker to some. So be sure to take those factors into account.

Take care of documents

This applies especially to foreigners planning to visit Bali for a surfing trip. Be smart and plan ahead to take care of your immigration and travel documents. This is especially important if you’re planning to bring your own surfing board – make sure you read up on proper travel directions for bringing a surfboard. The last thing you want is to run into customs problems on your surfing trip.

Bring enough money

Not every location in Bali has an EDC‌ machine where you can swipe your card. Always bring enough cash on you and a bit of extra for emergency situations. And a useful little tip is to make it a habit to have a small change in hand so that you can be more precise with your exchanges – especially when you’re surfing in remote locations.

Emergency precautions

This goes without saying, but it would be wise to have a back-up plan and precautions in case of emergencies. Make sure to have self-identification documents, emergency contacts, sunblock, extra fins, keys and a repair kit for your surfboard should you run into problems. First aid items are also just as important and get the phone numbers of the nearest hospital just in case.
